Project Description Luas line from Lucan to City Centre.

The Luas Line from Lucan to the City Centre will serve Ballyfermot, Liffey Valley and Lucan. This line will provide an alternative Luas access into the city centre. It will open up a new tram corridor on the south inner city serving areas with poor rail access.  It will also provide a connection to Metro West.

Projected Completion Date Completion date will be subject to the relevant statutory process and the procurement and contract award processes; the start and completion dates of projects which have not yet commenced , including the Lucan Luas line, will also be determined by the funding allocation available during the current difficult economic climate.
Current Status of Project

In September 2007 the Minister for Transport and the RPA Chief Executive launched the public consultation process on the route options for the new Luas Line from Lucan to the city centre. Two broad route options were identified by the RPA. Option 1 ran from Lucan Village to Trinity College via Ballyowen Park, Liffey Valley, Cherry Orchard, Ballyfermot, Inchicore, James’s Hospital and Christchurch. Option 2 ran from Newcastle Road in Lucan to St. Stephen’s Green via Castle Riada, Collinstown Park, Park West, Drimnagh, Rialto, The Coombe and Kevin Street. There were also a number of sub-options within these two broad corridors.

In October 2008, the RPA announced the selection of the Emerging Preferred Route Corridor for this Luas line. The preferred route is a hybrid of the two broad route options referred to above. The emerging preferred route runs from Newcastle Road in Lucan to Dame Street via Ballyowen Park, Liffey Valley, Cherry Orchard, Ballyfermot, linking up with the Luas Red Line at Blackhorse Stop and sharing the Red Line as far as James's Stop, Meath Street and Christchurch. The line will be approximately 15km long and will provide interchange with the Luas Red Line, the proposed Metro North and Metro West lines, Iarnród Éireann services and a range of bus services.

The RPA has decided that delivery of the Lucan Luas (F) Line will be phased with Phase 1 (referred to as Line F1) running from Newcastle Road in Lucan to the Blackhorse Stop on the Luas Red Line. Phase 2 (Line F2) will be a spur from the Luas Red Line on James's Street via Thomas Street, Meath Street and Christchurch to Dame Street.

The RPA will consult further with the public and key stakeholders on the detailed design of the route i.e. on the specific location of the track alignment, stop locations, Park and Ride facilities and the site for a depot.
