Integrated Smart Card Ticketing in the Greater Dublin Area

Project Title  Integrated Smart Card Ticketing in the Greater Dublin Area
   Ticket validator
Project Description
Technology

The integrated ticketing system in the Greater Dublin Area is being introduced on a phased basis, based on smart card technology, over the period to 2011. A progressive approach is being adopted to allow customers to familiarise themselves with using the new system and to permit transport operators to undertake the necessary replacement of magnetic strip technology, the testing of smart cards and the integration of the various technologies involved.

All the Luas network and Dublin Bus fleet have been fitted with smart card readers.

At present, electronic ‘pay-as-you-go’ smart cards are available for Luas services. (www.luas.ie)

In the case of Dublin Bus, the following Dublin Bus ticket products are available on Smart Card Tickets (www.dublinbus.ie):

Projected Completion Date 2011
Current Status of Project

The Irish Rail interim smart card scheme with an ePurse (electronic purse) facility has now been fully rolled-out to the public. This interim scheme, together with the Dublin Bus and Luas smart card schemes, will migrate to the single smart card scheme after its launch.

Subject to successful completion of the testing that is currently in train, a number of Dublin Bus and Luas annual pass-holders will be invited to participate in a customer pilot from late Summer. This will be followed later in the year by similar testing for ePurse users of Dublin Bus and Luas services. The pay-as-you-go system will be fully launched when this testing proves that the entire system is sufficiently robust. When this system goes live, it will facilitate cashless travel on services of participating operators, Dublin Bus and Luas initially.

The integrated smart card will subsequently be rolled out to cover services provided by private bus operators, Irish Rail (DART and commuter rail) and Bus Éireann on a pilot basis following completion of the necessary development, testing and commissioning of their systems. Testing and roll-out for these service providers will commence in early 2011. The single smart card, with ePurse capability, will replace the interim smart cards throughout 2011.
