Transport 21 is funding the continuing upgrade of the Intercity rail network as well as new and expanded commuter rail services in Dublin, Cork and Galway.
Other significant rail projects under Transport 21 include the re-opening of the Navan rail line, the four-tracking of the Kildare rail route, the re-opening of the Western Rail Corridor from Ennis to Claremorris and the construction of an interconnector rail tunnel to connect Heuston Station with the Docklands and the existing Northern Line. A new rail station at the Docklands was opened in March 2007, 2 years ahead of the original Transport 21 target date.
