The following developments took place in July 2009:
N4 Lucan Bypass
The N4 Leixlip to M50 road scheme opened on 6 July on time and on budget. The N4 improvement extends from the Kildare County Boundary in the west to the interchange with the M50 Motorway on the outskirts of Dublin in the east. The route follows the line of the existing N4, passing to the south of Lucan village and north of the developments at Fonthill Road. The length of the new scheme is approximately 8 kms and provides for an extra lane - widening from 2 to 3 lanes of traffic. It cuts 30 minutes off inbound journeys at peak times and 10 minutes during off peak times and provides free flow interchange at Newcastle eliminating a major bottleneck. This will impact positively on the strategic Dublin to Galway route and open up access to west county Dublin, Kildare and the Midlands.
N6 Athlone to Ballinasloe
The N6 Athlone to Ballinasloe road project was officially opened on 23 July. The 19.4 km scheme was completed 5 weeks ahead of schedule and under budget. The scheme, which forms part of the Dublin to Galway Major Interurban Route (MIU), is located between the west end of the N6 Athlone Bypass and the existing N6 east of Ballinasloe. It will remove 12,300 vehicles from the existing N6, increase road safety for drivers, improve traffic flow and reduce traffic congestion.
Dublin Bus
The new College Green Bus Corridor was introduced on Monday 27 July. Further information is available on www.transportfordublin.ie.
Midleton line
The new Cork-Midleton railway line opened on Thursday 30 July, with services operating every half-hour at peak, and every hour at off-peak from Tuesday 4 August.
New Trams for Luas
At end July, the RPA had taken delivery of five of the eight new trams ordered for the existing Tallaght/Sandyford Luas lines. The RPA will now fit the Radio and Automatic Vehicle Location systems to these vehicles. All eight new trams are expected to be available to enter passenger service by October 2009.
