December 2008

The following developments took place in December 2008:

LUAS

Proposed Luas Line D to Liffey Junction (Broombridge)

On 15 December 2008, following public consultation, the RPA announced that it had selected the preferred route for the proposed Luas Line D from the city centre to Broombridge. Details of the route can be found at http://www.rpa.ie/en/projects/luas_broombridge/Pages/default.aspx

RPA will soon commence the next phase of public consultation to input into the detailed design of this line. This will involve extensive consultation with key stakeholders and the public to define the exact alignment of the route and the location details for the stops and tram depot.

HEAVY RAIL

A contract was signed in December for 51 new Intercity railcars to be delivered in 2011/2012 for use on the longer distance commuter rail lines.

BUSES

Bus Éireann took delivery of 122 buses comprising commuter coaches, double deck coaches, double deck buses, midi buses and city buses during the last quarter of 2008. These buses are the final deliveries of a €72 million order of 239 new buses. 117 of the buses were delivered in 2007 and entered service in 2008. 170 of the buses were replacement buses and 69 additions to the fleet.

ROADS

M8 Cullahill - Cashel

The M8 Cullahill to Cashel road scheme was officially opened on 8 December,
7 months ahead of schedule.

The 40km motorway runs between Cullahill in County Laois and Cashel in County Tipperary. It bypasses Johnstown and Urlingford in County Kilkenny and Littleton and Horse and Jockey in County Tipperary.

Approximately 16,000 vehicles will be removed from the bypassed towns and villages on the route and an estimated 20 minutes will be cut from journey times from Cork to Dublin during peak hours.

M50 Upgrade Phase 1

Work on the N7 (Red Cow) Junction was substantially completed in December 2008 and this upgraded section of the M50 is now fully operational.
