Tram extensions on Red (Tallaght) Luas Line
The first two of the newly extended trams on the Red (Tallaght) Line entered service on 14 May 2007. The trams, which were extended from 30 metres to 40 metres, now have the capacity to carry 350 passengers compared to approximately 250 on the existing trams, a capacity increase of 40%. All 26 trams on the Red Line will be extended to 40 metres at intervals up to Summer 2008.
ROADS
N6 Galway to Ballinasloe
The sod was turned on Galway to Ballinasloe road project on the 4 May 2007 by Mr Noel Treacy, Minister for European Affairs. The PPP (public private partnership) project comprises 56 kms of new dual carriageway, a 7 km link road to the Loughrea Bypass, 32 kms of side roads and five grade separated junctions. It is being co-funded by Transport 21 and private finance raised by ICON (FCC Construction S.A. and Itinere Infraiestructuras from Spain and PJ Hegarty & Sons from Ireland). Work has commenced and is due to be completed early in 2010.
N25 Waterford City Bypass
Work began on the State’s longest cable-stayed bridge over the river Suir in Waterford on 11 May. Transport Minister, Martin Cullen visited the site to mark the commencement of the construction of the bridge. A key element of the N25 Waterford City Bypass national road project, the bridge will be the State’s longest cable-stayed bridge, running 465 metres long with a span of 230 metres. Waterford Joint Venture are the contractors in charge of the project.
N6 Tyrrellspass to Kilbeggan & N52 Mullingar to Belvedere
Transport Minister, Martin Cullen officially opened the N6 Tyrrellspass to Kilbeggan and the N52 Mullingar to Belvedere schemes, both of which have been completed ahead of schedule and within budget, on 16 May 2007.
The N6 Tyrellspass to Kilbeggan scheme completes Phase I of the Kinnegad to Kilbeggan project on the main Dublin to Galway road and bypasses the towns of Milltownpass, Rochfortbridge and Tyrrellspass, while removing over 10,000 vehicles from these towns daily. The Kinnegad to Tyrrellspass section and the N52 realignment section were officially opened in December 2006, one year ahead of schedule.
