Start of Rail Works on Luas Citywest (Line A1) Partnership

The Minister for Transport, Mr. Noel Dempsey T.D. was in Citywest today at an event to mark the start of the first section of rail works on the new Luas link to Citywest and Saggart.

Construction of Luas Citywest is now well underway with the works completed to a level which allows the installation of the first section of trackworks through Citywest Business Campus. Track works in the remaining areas are expected to get underway in the coming weeks including the N82 and Fortunestown lane road crossings. The construction of the park and ride facility is also underway.

This new line is being developed by means of a partnership between the public and private sectors and it is expected that passenger services will start in early 2011.

The private sector consortium which has been formed to partner the Railway Procurement Agency in the delivery of Line A1 is Citywest Luas Ltd. (CLL).

CLL is a group of local landowners and business interests (comprising of Davy Hickey Properties, Harcourt Developments Limited and Mansfield Group).

Luas Citywest will deliver a new option in top quality public transport to communities such as Cairnwood, Ambervale, Belgard Green, Fettercairn, Kilmartin, Brookview and Ardmore.

RPA has also signed a contract with BAM Rail Ltd. for the tie-in of this new line at Cookstown, the building of the substations and the reconfiguration of Belgard Stop. It has also placed an order for the delivery of eight new trams to augment the existing fleet.

Luas Citywest will deliver top quality public transport services to established communities and will facilitate the developing Citywest business area.

It is estimated that 4 million extra Red Line passenger journeys per year will be made as a result of this new line. It is also expected that 1.5 million vehicle trips will be eliminated per annum by 2016. Luas Citywest is a new 4.2km light rail link off the Luas Red (Tallaght-Connolly) Line at Belgard and running to Saggart in West County Dublin. The new line includes 5 new stops, 2 new substations and a 310 space Luas Park + Ride facility.

Luas Citywest (Line A1) is a key project within Transport 21.
