Minister Dempsey opens new N2 Castleblayney Bypass

The Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey T.D., today (Monday, 5 November 2007) officially opened the new N2 Clontibret to Castleblayney bypass. The bypass was delivered on time and in budget.

The new bypass is 15.9km in length and is a realignment of the existing N2 National Primary Route from the townland of Moy Otra north of Clontibret to the town land of Drumcrew south of Castleblayney town. The N2 National Primary Route is the main arterial route from Dublin to Derry, Donegal and the northwest.

Speaking at the bypass opening today Minister Dempsey said “The opening of this new bypass today is another major milestone in the upgrading of our national road network. It is indicative of the efforts being made by Government countrywide to improve the internal road transport infrastructure between regions and within regions. These new roads contribute to national competitiveness and to balanced regional development. This year alone over €52 million has been allocated for national roads in the country and investment in the BMW region is at an all-time high.”

The Minister added; “This new bypass will have a very positive impact, socially, economically and environmentally on the entire region. Car journeys in the area will be cut by up to 25 minutes and traffic congestion in Clontibret and Castleblayney will significantly ease. The new bypass will enhance the quality of life for locals and will allow visitors and locals alike to enjoy in greater comfort and safety the wonderful recreational facilities in the region.”

Speaking at the opening in Castleblayney today Mr Peter Malone, Chairman of the National Roads Authority, said: “Today is an important day for Monaghan and the Northeast. It truly highlights how the region is interdependent on a modern road network allowing economic growth and prosperity for everyone. Take a look at the impact of the improvements along the N2 north of Ardee. It is now the main arterial route from Dublin to Derry, Donegal and the Northwest. Along with the completion of the Ashbourne Bypass, the N2 is fast becoming a high quality route serving the Border and North west Regions. In addition, the country’s first major inter urban route - the M1 Dublin to the Border - was completed earlier this year. This underpins the NRA’s commitment to the development of the Border, Midland and Western Region in line with Government policy.”
